Cally Trench's drawings
Left Hand, Right Hand

Cally Trench is continuing her project of drawing her own hands every day in 2026-2027: from 5th August 2026 to 4th August 2027. She is drawing each day for exactly 23 minutes (down from the 30 minutes she allowed herself in 2025-26, the 45 minutes in 2024-2025, and the one hour in 2023-24). As previously, the drawings are life-size from life, made using both hands. The drawings are in ink (Rotring Tikky Graphic 0.1 pen) on watercolour paper (Fabriano Studio Satin hotpress 300gsm), 23 x 31 cm. Cally is posting each Tuesday drawing on this webpage and also on her Instagram account @callytrench. The Tuesday drawings are below in reverse chronological order (most recent first). Cally Trench writes: 'I am often asked about drawing with both hands. I am right-handed but I can draw with my left hand, although it feels much more conscious and deliberate. The drawings are made from life, and so I have to look at the hand that I am drawing and draw with the other one. For all the essential components of each hand - the outline and scaffolding lines, the position of knuckles, nails, veins, and the main creases and folds of skin - I draw my left hand with my right hand, and my right hand with my left hand. When it comes to some of the fine detail, 'contours' and shading, I may sometimes favour my right hand, while still constantly checking that I am drawing what I can see.' |
